Both horse chestnut and aescin, the active substance (saponin) extracted from horse chestnut fruits, have anti-edema and anti-inflammatory activity.
The activity of escin is mainly due to an increase in the excretion of glucocorticoids which inhibit the inflammatory process and the formation of edema. It also has vasoprotective properties whose mechanism of action is substantially linked to the ability of the active ingredient to reduce the number of pores in the capillary wall, decreasing its permeability and strengthening its resistance.
