Rectally it generally produces an evacuation within 15-20 minutes.
The mechanism of action of glycerol is; hyperosmotic type, drawing water in the stool and causing dehydration of the tissues with which it comes into contact.
This dehydration determines a local irritating effect that triggers peristaltic contractions with consequent stimulation of the emptying of the rectal ampoule.
Glycerol, administered rectally, is; able to promote peristalsis and lower bowel evacuation by virtue; of its irritating action and capacity; to soften the thickened fecal mass.
